Randy got his start in Hollywood, California. He apprenticed at Mayhem Inc. in 1994 and began tattooing in 1995. Soon after, Randy moved to Florida to work for Artistic Armor Tattoo in Tampa. There, he was fortunate enough to work with some of the finest artists around, as well as to see a shop run like a well-oiled machine.
New Years 1996, Randy moved back to Los Angeles and worked at Studio City Tattoo until mid-1997 …Then it was time for him to open his own shop! The Om Tattoo and Body Piercing opened in winter of 1997. Randy Scott Howell and partner Rich Bonet opened a location at 451 N. Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles, CA. In the time the studio was open, Randy tattooed many clients, including regulars such as Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac from the Goo Goo Dolls. Randy did the Picasso tattoo on John’s right arm, the thinker and question marks on his left arm, as well as the sacred heart on his left forearm. On Robby, Randy tattooed Japanese wind swirls on his right calf, a bracelet on his right wrist, and a pin-up girl on his left calf. At the end of 1998, the Om closed its doors, and Randy once again took to the road. He Went To The Philadelphia Eddie tattoo convention where he was offered a job working for Billy Eason at Red Dragon Tattoo in Richmond, VA. He moved down south and worked with those fine folks for 6 months. In the summer of 1999 Randy got a call from the Goo Goo Dolls while they were touring the United States with opening act Sugar Ray. Randy was asked to come along on the tour and tattoo the bands and crew for about a week… of course, he went. Joining the tour in upstate New York and leaving the groups in Texas over a week later, was a great experience for Randy. On the road, he tattooed Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath. He also tattooed DJ Homicide from Sugar Ray… a rose for his “beloved mother” Brenda on his right arm. Celtic interlocking hearts were tattooed on Goo Goo Dolls guitarist /singer Johnny Rzeznik’s right wrist; while the most notable tattoo of the tour was done on Robby Takac bassist /singer of the Goo Goo Dolls… he literally got tattooed until he had to run onto the stage for show time! After the tour experience was over, Randy went back to LA and worked at various shops for a few months. Still wanting to travel and learn different styles, another road trip was planned. In June of 2000 Randy landed in Long Island, NY working for Cliff’s Tattoo. Randy worked and lived in NY for 1 ½ years while visiting and taking working trips to Los Angeles many times in between. February of 2002, Randy made the move back to Hollywood; currently working by appointment only at a studio in Los Angeles.
